Biometrics is the science of using unique physiological or behavioral characteristics to verify the identity of an individual. The term “biometrics” originates from the two Greek words, “bios” and “metron”. Biometrics literally means ”life measurement.” For this glossary and for Kaba Benzing, it refers to automated methods for identifying people based on their unique physical characteristics or behavioral traits. Types of biometric methods include fingerprint scanning, iris scanning, retina scanning, handwriting analysis, handprint recognition, and voice recognition. Because biometric traits are unique to each individual, they can be used to prevent theft or fraud. Unlike a password or PIN (personal identification number), a biometric trait cannot be forgotten, lost, or stolen.
In this regard Kaba developed the biometric terminal Bedanet 91 20 for Access Control.
