What is biometrics?

Biometrics is the science and technology of detecting and measuring physical characteristics. The term “biometrics” originates from the two Greek words, “bios” for life and “metron" for measure. Individuals are identified by their measurable physical traits. These traits are the basis for every type of biometric identification.

Biometric identification uses individual physical characteristics or behavior patterns that are compared with previously recorded reference data, instead of keys, passwords or PINs.

Why biometrics?

Biometric identification methods have been experiencing an enormous upswing over the last few years. Technological innovation has increasingly made it possible to detect biological traits quickly and reliably and to analyze them at a justifiable expense and in high quality. The use of biometrics is a promising approach to solving the unresolved problem of many security concepts. How to link identities and their associated authorizations to the physical persons that have the correct identity?

With biometrics, physiological and behavioral characteristics of the individual are used for authentication, i.e., checking that person’s authenticity. It records both unique and common traits. Although the human memory is unique, a person’s capacity to memorize is limited. With the constant flow of information, this becomes critical. Today’s media for storing passwords and PINs are only suitable for temporary storage media. However, they have one big disadvantage: they can get lost or misplaced. So what would be better for authentication than a person’s own physical, biometric traits? They cannot be forgotten, passed on, spied, or stolen.

From the large number of different biometric methods, Kaba has decided in favor of fingerprint recognition as the identification method. It has been accepted as the most popular method among users and as the leading biometric method on the market. On the basis of its user friendliness, biometrics offers the opportunity of achieving a clear reduction in costs without loss in security.

The most important prerequisite for the secure and quick functioning of biometric identification is the first-time enrollment of the fingerprint (= template), which is then stored as a reference print.

Depending on the user's requirement, Kaba offers two different types of biometric technologies – an identification solution and a verification solution

Both methods use the reference fingerprint as the basis for identifying individuals.
