Project: Hospital La Fe in Valencia

Hospitals have special security needs. Inviting open spaces have to be created for visitors and patients, whilst operating theaters need strict access control.

The University Hospital La Fe in Valencia is now one of the top 50 public hospitals in Europe and the largest in Spain. The budget for the building amounted to EUR 383 million, and it offers a thousand beds in single rooms, 195 consulting rooms and 116 examination rooms for outpatient treatment. It was equipped with the latest technology and boasts 39 operating theaters.

Obviously, patients, visitors and staff need to have varying and independent access rights. And access to A + E areas, to special equipment or to outpatient and inpatient treatment areas, for instance, entails very different requirements. For example, biometric scanners are used to protect special equipment from inappropriate use. Kaba in Spain is specialized in security systems for hospital environments. Together with the customer, a tailored solution was developed for La Fe, putting in place a system which is easy to use, practical and suitable for expansion at any time. The setup combines stand-alone and online cylinders which work together thanks to CardLink technology, access control units for elevators and floor entrances, and biometric scanners for particularly sensitive areas.

It was precisely this variety of solutions at different security levels which clinched the project for Kaba. The simplicity and modular structure of the solution were also met with enthusiasm.
